Presentation and address
The Experimental Nutrition Laboratory at UFV (LabNex) belonged to the Department of Nutrition and Health at UFV and was inaugurated in 1980, at the time, under the coordination of Professor Neuza Maria Brunoro Costa. Since 2009, LabNex has been coordinated by Professor Hercia Stampini Duarte Martino. The main purpose of the laboratory is to develop research that evaluates the functional role of nutrients, foods, and food products on various biological aspects, using rodent models, mainly rats and mice. From its opening to the present day, LabNex has developed numerous researches of international scope, being the source of numerous scientific articles and training of professionals at undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral levels.
LabNex’s main research areas are nutrition biochemistry, dietetics, bioactive compounds in human health, mineral bioavailability, intestinal microbiota, protein quality, nutritional and sensory characterization of food matrices and new product development. The main investigated pathways are inflammation, oxidative stress, adipogenesis, glucose metabolism, bone metabolism, muscle synthesis, among others. In addition to in vivo research, the laboratory has national and international partnerships in order to increase scientific quality and train experienced and qualified professionals.
In addition to experimental research using animals, complete analyzes of food composition are performed at LabNex, including macronutrients and phytochemical compounds, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, fibers and their fractions, phenolics, tannins and resistant starch. In addition, we have partnerships with other UFV laboratories and carry out analyzes of vitamins, minerals, anthocyanins and fatty acid profile.
